Our parish priest this morning looked to St. Augustine for his beautiful interpretation of the Gospel reading.
The paralytic was carried by 4 friends, and lowered down to the feet of Jesus: 4 is the number of man, of man's effort. He was carried to the Lord Jesus Christ to be healed: 3 is the number for God. 3+4=7: 7 is the number for perfection.
He asked that we pray that our human nature, humbly lowered and placed at the feet of Jesus, may allow the Light of God to enter into our heart, into our being, so that we too may be made whole.

Today Epiphany was celebrated in USA, and our priest gave a most wonderful homily; expressing possibilities I had never heard before, he said that just as the star vanished when the Magi found the true Light, so too they were able to let go of their gold, frankincense and myrrh and leave them at the feet of their King. Gold symbolized worldly power, and frankincense and myrrh were used in occult practices in the east. The Magi would no longer look to the stars, to astrology, for guidance nor to worldly or occult power for their security. The Presence of God had dawned in each of their heart, and now in each of their heart, the Light and Love of the Savior would be All in all.

The Baptism of the Lord, is movable in the Catholic Church. This year the feast is not celebrated, but the readings on Jan 6, addressed the Baptism and the great Trinitarian love that was revealed. Orthodox Christians celebrate the Baptism of the Lord on Jan. 6 (Theophany) so in a convoluted sort of way, there was a bit of unity for us all this year.

St. John Damascene was the great defender of icons. This western engraving illustrates the story of the miraculous icon associated with this great saint, beloved both in the east and in the west. Because of his defense of the holy images and because of his great ability as a writer the Muslim caliph of Damascus ordered his right hand to be cut off at the wrist. St. John asked for the hand and prayed before the icon known as the Hodegetria or She Who Shows the Way. Asking fervently that his hand might be restored, he fell asleep exhausted. Virgin Mary came to him in a dream; when awoke his hand was miraculously restored with only a red line showing. In gratitude, St. John composed the hymn "In thee, O Full of Grace, all creation rejoices" The icon before which St. John prayed exists to this day on Mount Athos in the Hilander Monastery. It is called Tricherousa, or Panagia "Of Three Hands" due to the silver hand which St. John placed on the icon as a testament to the above miracle.
